Let’s just get one thing straight. I am not your friend. I am perfectly capable of making friends at work and with other adults. I don’t need to give birth to have a friend.
Let’s get another thing straight. I was not put on this planet to kiss your ass, bend over backwards and cater to your every need. Too bad for you, but I am not new age, open minded, or free thinking. Nope, I am old fashioned, strict, and you will get with the program or your life will be a living hell!
School counts!! You do not have a job. Your only job is to be a student and I expect you to be a damn good one. I will not tolerate laziness. I will not accept C’s on your report card and E’s for missing homework assignments when you get A’s on the tests. If you get A’s on the test that means you have intelligence. You are not learning disabled or unable to complete the work…just lazy.
Well, since I just cancelled your piano lessons, confiscated all your Nerf guns, and hid your video games, you will now have nothing but time on your hands to get your homework done! When you show me you have followed through I will return these things too you, eventually, but you will earn them, oh yes you will have to earn them back because there are no free rides in life.
Because I love you, and yes I really do love you, more than you will ever possibly know until the day you have a child of your own, I have tried to help you, guide you, and even shield you from some of the hardships of life. I realize now that I was not actually helping you at all. Coddling you, my son, is not going to prepare you for the realities of life. Life is hard. Life is exhausting. Sometimes we fail. But when we succeed the feeling is amazing and wonderful, but success only comes with diligence, hard work, and desire. If I am your constant crutch, then you will not learn to have diligence, a hard work ethic, and desire.
So from now on, your school work is your own. I will not help you to complete it, but you better beleive that I will be checking to make sure it is done. Only completed homework will allow you to get your things back.
There is one more thing you better learn, and learn fast. I am your mom and you are stuck with me. You want to hate me, go ahead. You want to cuss me out, go ahead. For the next five years whether you like it or not I am so totally the boss of you. As for you hating me, I am a big girl, I can take it. I know your words are said out of anger and frustration and there will come a day when you will regret them. The mean things you say today won’t make me stop loving you and it will never make me give up on you.
I want you to have a bright future, a future of your own choosing. If you want to flip burgers for the rest of your life and that brings you happiness then I will be happy that you’re happy. But if you want to be an engineer and design cars, a musician in an orchestra, or even the president, I want to make sure that those options don’t become lost to you because you are too young to appreciate the wonderful education you are receiving.
So I will nag you, I will harp on you, and I will bitch at you. You will struggle because of your ADHD but I will not let you use that as an excuse. I am sure there are many more fights yet to come and you will continue to say mean things to me, but one day this shall pass, and I hope when that day comes you will see that I only ever acted out of love.
I nag because I love you. I harp because I love you. I bitch because I love you. One day, years from now, you will know this to be true, when you are a little older, a littler wiser, and especially once you have kids of your own. One day you will understand why I don’t just throw my hands up in the air and give up, turn my back, or walk away.
